I completed 90 credits in Psychology and asked a question in the classroom only once. And this question was asked in the first course. Agreed on all points, James. The didactic learning component can be taught in an online environment; however, online instruction cannot yield the desired results for high risk situations, examples of which you have mentioned. Sylvia: Agreed. Quality of the online learning experience is the primary criterion for successful online learning as well as maintaining the credibility of the program and the institution that offers that program. Regardless of whether we take the hybrid approach, the online component must meet the requirements for a quality online course. We have to strive to optimize the use of computer technology to enhance the effects of the instructional transactions that lead to students achieving the desired learning outcomes; not trying to use the technology to deliver and manage all instructional events.
Jean: Please share your thoughts with me on this scenario and advsie whether you believe that in this situation I describe, the degree of Instructor effort will be about the same. I am teaching a course in a traditional classroom setting in which the majority of student effort involves problem solving surrounding case studies. I use the choreographing approach to teach the case studies. Satrohan

Question for You If you were faced with slecting a candidate for a job, would your comfort level be the same if you were to choose a candidate who graduated from an online program versus a candidate who graduated from a program, the courses of which were delivered in a traditional classroom setting? Suppose you are tasked with rolling out an online course nationally, the learning outcomes of which are theory based as well as experiential driven. Having read your response, I have concluded that you are in favor of online learning provided that: • The technology supports student-instructor interaction. • Students obtain support and feedback in a timely manner. • Psychomotor skills should be taught using a hybrid approach. Some of you maintained that managing students in an online environment requires equivalent effort when compared to a traditional classroom environment; others maintain it will take more effort. In my review of the responses to this question, I noted several noteworthy observations, among which are: Successful online learning requires self-discipline. Instructor's proficiency and competency. Student's learning style. The design of the online learning experience. All of the above factors influence the degree to which students achieve the desired learning outcomes.
