The same problems exist for online as in class, the only thing that changes is the distance.
Each type os discussion is important and the instructor whould keep tabs on who is participating and to what degree.
It only makes logical sense to have the students know you and you know them, although I think some students may not want to post a biography of themselves to the entire class, just to the instructor might be best.
Reviewing the course and expectations with students on day 1 is paramount. Also ensuring they can navigate it, this will change if you only have returning students, only new or a mix.
