About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Michael , these are both great questions to ask as it opens the door to encourage them to participate more & discuss. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Dorenda, this is true & I think that as we seek to find balance in how we teach & present information, we help our students to realize there is a balance in how they acquire that information as well. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Thomas, this is a great example of how to approach technology use in the classroom. A key point here is that there are still those who will abuse the policy, but we hold them accountable & move on. No system is perfect & people will abuse them, but even that can be a great teachable moment. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Robert, these are both great strategies & role plays can be highly effective in applying content. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Thomas, definitely true! If your school does not have a good LMS, I encourage you to lobby for one & if they do & you aren't using it, learn how to use it, it will help you. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Kristian , this is very true. I like to find ways to interject mini breaks during my lecture by giving the students time to discuss key points or ideas with one another. This can help with refocusing too. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Dorenda, yes & I also think it makes us more flexible & adaptable in the moment so we can move "faster" in certain situations. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Thomas, I would agree with you that I'm not sure the "power will go out" & I applaud your enthusiasm for technology. I would argue that there is a prime value on helping our students learn to research & think critically without the aid of technology. I have seen a decline in these skills among many in Gen Y. There does seem to be an overreliance on the quick, easy answers provided by technology. Now always bad, but we also need to learn to think for ourselves. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Innocent , this is very true. I don't believe we always have to have the latest & greatest, but we should be showing the Gen Y students how to incorporate technology & that we are willing to do so. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
chuka, you are right that they definitely like to get their information very quickly & with this we have to educate the Gen Y learner on how to be a good consumer of the vast amounts of information available at the click of a button. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
