About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Emily, this is a great way to help students with learning disabilities as well as just helping various types of learners. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Robert, this is an excellent point & one that should not be overlooked. Engaging the students in their own success not only encourages ownership but a sense of pride as well. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Bill, this is great & shows your dedication as an instructor. I would add that the more open we show ourselves to be, the more likely the struggling students will be to seek our help. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Discussion Comment
johanna, this is a great strategy for dividing up the student groups. I agree with you that this will help them learn to understand & appreciate the views & opinions of those who are probably the most different from them. This is a valuable skill. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Bill, this is definitely a potential strategy for showing the students the importance of staying on task & completing their projects. This is reflective of many of the group assignments in the corporate environment & so can be used to help prepare them for their careers. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Daniel, this is an excellent point & probably the best argument for getting to know each of my students as individuals. The better I know them, the better I can help them if they are struggling. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
carlos, yes, audience analysis is one of the primary skills of an effective speaker & should be for classroom instructors as well. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
cory, that is great & exciting to see. This is also a great way to keep the learning going for the students by encouraging them to find out more & more for themselves. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Sandra, this is definitely one of the greatest challenges in helping these students. I would agree that the use of mentors/tutors is a great idea as it does help keep the rest of the class moving forward. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
dawanna, this is a good point, those real life experiences examples are great illustrators of points & excellent teaching tools. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
