About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Robert, it is interesting. I will tell you that I've had mixed feedback from my students on Prezi. Some have told me that they really don't like it as well as ppt. Just something to consider. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Ruth, I like your flexibility; you have a clear policy, but allow for exceptions. On a somewhat related note, I just read an interesting article the other day in which a higher ed instructor describes why he does not allow laptops in the classroom. Very interesting. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Robert, this is a great point, it also allows me to be more "in the moment" with the students. Depending on the topic I want their input & so the whiteboard is a great way to do this. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Robert, I've found this as well. One challenge I run into is that they also want me to offer them a constantly updated grade total for the class. I take time at the beginning of each course to show them how to do this themselves & I make it very easy. This way they can always know where they stand. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Deborah, these are all good suggestions for helping students who may be struggling in our classes. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Laura , this is a great idea as it promotes the balance of the work & the shared responsibility. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Laura , excellent point. We have to be careful to be professional, but not so high that the students don't understand. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Shelly, yes, when we can really connect with our audience on a personal level, it helps us so much more. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Discussion Comment
Tammy , this is true & they are definitely complementary concepts. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Allen , this is an excellent idea as it gives them the connections centered around the course. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
