About me

I currently serve as the Vice President of Business Solutions for Bridgepoint Education. In my present role, I provide guidance to the company's ground based and online colleges to optimize their operations while staying within regulatory guidelines.

I have over 22 years of experience in the education industry. My experience encompasses virtually all aspects of the education business, including admissions, financial aid, academics, career services, and management of multi-campus operations. I’ve held senior level management positions at Career Education Corporation, MedVance Institute and the University of Phoenix (Apollo Group) as well as providing consulting services to a multitude of colleges and universities during my tenure with Campus Management Corporation.

My focus has been on campus start ups, regulatory compliance, process improvement, and operational oversight of multiple campus colleges, including international campuses. I recognize the challenges of working in a highly regulated environment that has grown more complex as companies have expanded operations, either organically or through acquisition, to include multiple regulatory bodies and governing oversight entities.

I hold a B.S. degree in Business from Arizona State University and an M.A. degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. I have completed the Apollo Group's Executive Development Program and the Career College Association's (now APSCU) Leadership Institute.

It's good to hear that these topics are covered at meetings and thru internal email communications, Nida. Are you also aware of how such information is shared with students?

Paul - I have seen several respond to this post with dress code as a frequencly referenced policy. It's great to have it available for the sutdent when you meet with them. I am wondering if you also have it posted anywhere in the college as another reminder to students since this seems to be a common violation.
David - The allowance for the $100 token gifts to students and alumni is one of the safe harbor provisions that will be eliminated effective July 1, 2011. Institutions should review their policies to ensure compliance after this upcoming date.
Excellent points, Rebecca. We can sometimes forget the power of praise and can miss opportunities to motivate by simply focusing on the "human element".

Kimberly - it's great to have these items outlined in writing when dealing with such challenges.

Please check with your institution for specific policies and processes but, my understanding is that these "referral leads" must be handled slightly differently than when information is requested directly from the interested party. Specifically, the individual would not fall under the provision for calling within a certain time of initiating contact since the fact you have their name came from another party. If the individual is on a DNC list, you must follow related rules. I have seen several suggestions for handling this including: having the student who referred the new prospect call you or have them bring the referral… >>>

It's sometimes disappointing to see students violating basic policies but helpful to have them outlined in writing when you are trying to enforce them.
Great comments, Tearee! I appreciate you sharing your insights to good management techniques!

Great items for preparation, Ashley. I would add that in addition to being scheduled and conducted, meetings notes/minutes or other documentation is available to provide evidence of any meetings that are required for compliance or accreditation approvals.
