nicolas, Yes! We think career services should start the moment the applicant visits the school. Then career services staff needs to be involved with students on almost a daily basis. The goal is to keep students focused on the end and the purpose of going to school - to get a job and start a career. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

nicolas, We totally agree that a successful career services department impacts on all areas of the school. We think that career services people should sit in Admissions! Applicants visit schools because they want to train for a job. Are they really interested in what will be taught in an A & P course? Career services can assist instructors to talk about life on the job. Career services can require attendance at workshops and complete other job search preparation homework. The school will get a great reputation that they do help grads find jobs. Others will want to enroll. Thanks, Susan… >>>

Aaron, Realistic budgets take the involvement of everyone on staff. It's a challenge in every organization. The goal is to budget effectively and have strategies in place for constant monitoring and change. The reality is we never plan effectively and things end up costing more than planned. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Aaron, Job descriptions are vital for all concerned. This means the employer, school, instructors, and career services staff all need to know what is required for each career you train for. In fact, we find it helpful to review job descriptions in class. Students need to know why they are learning certain skills and theory and how it will be used on the job. They need to understand the demands of the job and and be able explain how they can meet them. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Aaron, Good points. We think that community outreach is a must. A school rep must visit with every employer and potential employer. It is important to know what skills and knowledge grads need to be work ready. By staying in touch with the community you learn about new jobs and training needed. And of course you learn about job openings, externship openings, and more. It's a partnership. Employers need to look at career schools as The source for training and staffing. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Shaun, We think that Plans are always bigger than the budget. The goal is how to handle this? Perhaps there is some prioritizing that is needed. If all plans are good how can you implement them with the given funds? If it is about human resources, what about asking Alumni to volunteer to help out. If they were happy attending your school and have jobs they love, they are a great source of fill-in staffing and will want to give their time - from time to time. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Aaron, Really great perspective about the concept of a Plan - whether for the next week, year, or 5 years. A Plan gets your Team thinking on the same page. New ideas can develop. You can check how you are doing and what should be eliminated or added. A Plan gives your Team the same goals to strive for and sets a collegial environment. We think that a check up should be more than just once a month to start. If you can't get people together more often, how about a weekly conference call at a certain time. Once the… >>>

Piper, Good point. Your personality might be someone at your school who can be trained. What about your alumni. There are many with varying accomplishments who can talk on behalf of your school. Thanks, susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Julie, Great tips, Julie. These ideas are all great. Since students spend so much time with their instructors we feel a lot of employment awareness and training needs to go on in the classroom. Sometimes it is a mind set where the instructor always talks about how a skill is used in the workplace. Instructors need to be working in the field. Therefore they can talk about the day-to-day joys and frustrations of the job. Alumni can assist in the classroom and throughout the school. They are very believable and knowledgeable when they talk about the job search process and… >>>

martha, Hi Martha We agree that placement is the job of everyone on staff. Each has to be trained as to what part they play in getting students to think about the world of work and how to develop employment skills. Faculty are definitely involved. There is so much they can do in the classroom to show how skills and theory are applied to the work place. Student services and career services staff should offer a variety of opportunities for students to gain employment skills knowledge. Alumni can be called in to assist if you are running low on staff!… >>>
