Jan, Many schools and organizations don't plan because it seems like a huge undertaking. Sometimes it makes more sense to plan one department or one year at a time. Decide on something manageable to plan. Then work on it, practice planning skills and strategies, decide how and when you will evaluate how you are doing. You may find people on staff who love to plan and are happy to take over this project. It really is essential. Every entity and person, for that matter, needs a destination and road map to get here. Kathryn, Interesting situation, Kathryn. Is it a full training program that indicates there is employment at the end? Or is it job enhancement courses? Courses usually don't require placement. You can always offer these students job skills training or assistance. But you would have more flexibility. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Suellen, Good points. A plan does have to work, be thought out, have buy in from everyone, be measurable, and constantly change. Regulatory requirements do tend to make it an exercise rather than a working document. (I didn't say that.) We think the best plans are fluid, dynamic, workable, and change often. Amanda, This is great. We have spoken with career services staff who have goals of 10 - 20 contacts a day per staff person. It sounds ambitious but turns out it is very do-able. It gets to be kind of a contest. The results is a huge list of employers to build relationships with. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Josephine, Yes, we agree that everyone on staff has a role in the student successfully getting placed. And everyone on staff certainly needs to be trained about the services offered by Career Services. This shows that Career Services is not the "last stop" but rather training that goes on from enrollment and throughout the classroom experience. You are right that constant involvement with students and their goals helps to identify possible challenges. A student might simply be enrolled in the wrong program. Before the individual drops out it may be possible to transfer him/her to a program that better meets… >>>

Josephine, Great points. Working faculty ideally talk about how the skills and knowledge they teach are used in the workplace. Hopefully they talk about the workplace a lot - the challenges and the satisfactions. This is a way to help students get used to or prepare for the world of work. We totally agree about the value of Alumni. They are usually ready, willing, and able to help in whatever way possible. They are credible people in the admissions department, can mentor students to help keep them in school. Alumni can also assist with placement by reviewing resumes, holding mock… >>>

Josephine, Wow. This is great. This activity helps to improve self confidence and get the student to be responsible for the job search process. You can then be seen as a resource. We assume that you get copies of the company, decision maker, and contact information? It is important to provide coaching and feedback to students at each step. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Josephine, This is GREAT. Every school should write this down! The reality is that employers surround you. You just have to develop the best talking points to reach them. Then it is important to develop ways to stay in touch and maintain and build the relationships. People always want to be helpful. Therefore think of how you want employers to assist you and ask them. They are generally willing to conduct mock interviews, organize job shadowing, and much more. You are right that Alumni can be the door to job openings and employer and hiring manager introductions. Thanks, Susan Dr.… >>>

Leah, Staying in touch with employers and potential employers has sooo many benefits. You find out where the jobs are, how to improve your programs, when new programs may be needed in the workplace and much more. You'll have employers to invite to sit on Advisory Boards and to review your curriculum. Many opportunities by staying in touch with employers and your grads. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Leah, A short survey is a great start for any initiative and to check how you are doing. You might want to consider setting up an Alumni Community, It is a great way to assist your grads, It also provides a way to talk to employers about improving training to meet employment needs and tell you about job openings and whether they can host externship sites. Alumni are valuable resources and can provide extra hands especially in employment skills training, MaxK offers a course on how to set up Alumni Communities, benefits, and ROI.
