Connie, We also believe that public relations is the best form of marketing. It is certainly cost effective and helps target the exact people you want to reach. Many of the projects and events you hold are probably newsworthy. Bring in a few news people for a massage. They will remember you when you tell them about an event, an accomplishment, a service to the community, a great student success story, and more. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Cheryl , Really good points. We also think that the more the student is involved in the workplace, as they are going to school, the better their retention and motivation. That means taking them to the job site, having them meet people who are working, and talk to grads and alumni. Instructors need to talk about how skills taught in class are used on the job. Very challenging. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Cheryl , We totally agree. This is a reason we think that Placement staff should sit near or in Admissions offices! Students enroll for jobs. Information about the job search process and where they can expect to work will definitely get a person interested in your school! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
mary, Very well put, Mary. There is a direct relationship between placement and admissions. It is always good to keep in mind that people seek training to get a job. That is their main focus. So involving placement as much as possible from the start is very important. Employed grads can introduce the school to their employers and to job openings as they occur. Your education department can talk with employers to be sure training programs meet workplace needs. When you think about it, everyone is a team helping the other departments reach their goals. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

We also agree. Finding a job is a job.  That's why we feel career and employment skills training should be ongoing and start at time of enrollment.  Becoming job search ready takes time. In addition, self confidence that is required for successful interviewing takes a while to build. Feedback and practice are all necessary. Thanks, Susan

Angela, Right. Everyday students have to be learning employment skills. They need the abilities and the confidence to find a job. This takes time, skills development, review, practice, and opportunities. Career Services may need to develop a custom plan to meet the job search needs of each student. thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Angela, Placement rates are a requirement by most regulatory bodies. We believe that a school placement rate should exceed expectations. Getting a job is the reason by people enroll in career schools. Great placement rates also encourage students to enroll. Set up effectively, the placement department can keep track of all grads and their employment records. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Scott, We agree that it is a must to stay in touch with employers and ask them how your grad is doing on the job. Find out what other skills and knowledge are needed to be productive from day 1. Externship sites are a great way to connect with employers. Imagine if the expectation of the externship site was that it was a long interview process with the expectation that the student will be hired? That can make a different in placement! We think that the Placement Department needs to take a Community Outreach approach and contact companies that could… >>>

Scott, Your program sounds great and very thorough. We assume that this is a required course? When grads come back from the interview and give you feedback do you continue to work with them? What happens if they don't get the job? Do you both look back and review the interview and consider where improvements can be made? We find that a required course is a must. But it needs to be followed up in lots of ways including more workshops and feedback. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Scott, Good points. The reality is that people enroll in career schools for a job. That is what they want to know about. Imagine if Career Services shared space with the Admissions Department. And imagine that an interview with a placement person was part of the admissions process! We think that more people would enroll when they hear first hand about how they will be assisted in the job process. They will want to know where grads get jobs and how they are doing. So Placement is number 1 in our opinion! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
