Daysis, Sounds good. We find that while Career Services is open that students don't always realize it is for them! That's why we tend to see results when employment skills assignments are required. Keeping in touch is what it is all about, as you have discovered, Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Daysis, That's great. Then how often do you meet with students re career services? Are they required to complete workshops and assignments? Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Paula, Great observations. We agree. That's why we think that Placement and Career Services need to be part of the Admissions Tour. In fact, imagine if the two departments sat together? Prospective students really want to know about where the jobs are! Yes, grads are a grreat source of qualified referrals. That's why we suggest you formalize your contact with grads by instituting an Alumni Association. Grads help with enrollments, retention, and can tell you about jobs at their places of work. MaxKnowledge offers a course on how to set up an Alumni Association. Best wishes, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Interesting dilemma, Doris,  The space issue might be easier to solve by using something nearby and off campus.  Always an issue to get students to participate when their time is limited.  But if students who participate get great jobs, it might encourage the others to make the time. Another thought is to hold your workshops in the lunch room.  Also ask the students for their ideas.  Good luck, Susan

Doris - Interesting situation about lack of space to hold workshops.  Do you think any of your employers would make space available for students to practice their employment skills training?  Maybe these employers would even conduct mock interviews and make it very real.  If you keep in touch with alumni then you can ask them to assist you in many different ways.  Great idea about letters from grads.  Have you considered asking for Student Success Stories.  The Alumni Director at Pima Medical Institute, June Gudeman, has student success stories mounted graphically on wall boards.  She posts them throughout the schools. … >>>

Doris, This is great Doris. We also believe that career services needs to work closely with Admissions, The reality is that students enroll for a job. That is the key motivation for most. So it is vital they know about all the career services offered. Getting a job to some is more difficult than taking a final! Sounds like your school is a place a go to. Now everyone needs to know all you do for your students. Best wishes, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
kelly, Interesting idea. There are so many definitions and forumlas for job fairs. They can be at the campus, off, held by certain companies or community organizations, and more. We think all job fairs have to be relevant, interesting, engage the student and grads, and involve as many as possible. Also they have to be promoted before, during, and after the event. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
kelly, We believe that career services and employment skills should be offered on the first day of school. The skills have to be learned and integrated over a period of time. They can't be learned in a crash course. It is important to involve everyone on campus in educating students about how to get a job. That means instructors, staff, and certainly alumni. Also get employers involved in talking about the interview process and how to get the interview. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Hi Patricia and Gwendolyn - We have seen that career schools with Alumni Associations increase their enrollment, retention, and placement!  No matter how  new or established a school is, we feel Alumni Communitiies  are a must.  It describes the new look in the private career school sector.  We have to reimagine what alumni careeer schools  look like.  Susan

We also endorse starting the job search process and employment skills training on day 1! Students need a lot of time to learn these skills and develop confidence. Also this helps to keep students motivated because the goal of employment is always in view. So retention should increase too. Great policy. Susan
