Point Values
My method is to value the major timeposts during a course: exams [I give three all equally valued], one assignment which is written, teacher evaluation which is composed of attendance, proper equipment for the course and class participation. Lateness of the written asignment of one week drops their grade by 50%, late by two weeks is not accepted at all.
Hi Summer:
A good syllabus puts all expectations into writing. Frequent referencing the syllabus will reinforce it's use, importance, and serve as a reminder that the syllabus is what the teacher will be using as a measure of student performance, compliance, and grading.

It is so important to explain and include all requirements, specifically grading, clearly as a part of the syllabus. If not, we are opening ourselves to much questioning and grief if students feel they were not forewarned.
Hi Louis:
Good deal. This seems appropriate especially if the guidelines are clearly stated at the beginning of the course and in print, such as in a syllabus or other written document all can refer to should there be a dispute obout what was said.
