Dawn,
Yes, want and need to know. I wonder how instructors who don't provide expeditious grade information expect their students to make progress in a timely manner.

Barry Westling

Students are fanatic about their grades, even the students who are not performing very well. Making the students wait too long for their status in the course can cause anxiety and frustration. These feelings are not conducive to learning and retention and can possibly hinder their performance in the class.

Students will always want to know their progress in the class.

Ashlee,
Grade-books that students can access are very helpful, but also require diligence by the instructor to keep them current.

Jay,
Yeah, without early intervention, some students may falter too far without time to make needed corrections.

Melissa,
Sharing grade and performance data is nearly as important the delivery of the course material. Students who are off track need redirection. And better performing students can be stroked for their effort. Everyone can benefit from advice and suggestions the instructor has to give.

This is important so students can keep track of where they stand in the class. To let them know what they need to improve upon. I like the electronic gradebooks that students are able to access so that they are continually aware of where they stand as long as the instructor keeps them updated.

It is vital to keep students informed of their progress in a course. Students often think they are either doing much better or much worse than they actually are in a course. Communicating with students in reference to their progress provides opportunity to clarify and follow up on expectations, give valuable feedback and it also ensures that the instructor can identify high risk students and provide the proper support early enough to have a positive impact.

I think it is important to inform students of their status in the classroom. This not only helps their performance in the classroom, but also lets them know where they stand. I usually take assignments late, so I do not have to give extra credit assignments. However, I make it a big deal when students do have all assignments turned in (during midterm and final, I mention in general those students are done with the work several days before the midterm and final exam. Most students know who I am talking about, I do not mention names. I know this makes the other students that have to do the work to get caught up, jealous because they procrastinated. I find most students realize their mistakes and want to correct procrastination for the next class.

Daniel ,
Yes, sometimes it's best to corral students to give them needed information.

Keeping students informed of where they stand in any course, academically and in regards to attendance, is important because not every student logs in weekly to check their grade or even knows where they stand with their attendance.

Danice,
Students want and need to know their status. I like to personalize sharing grade information by having a individualized discussion. This allows me to offer advice, suggestions, and to encourage.

It shows you care about their progress in the class and you want them to do good. It gives them the motivation to do better and increase grade.

I agree with this comment. Student should know at all times where they stand in the course. If an instructor expects students to be on time with their work and commit ample outside time to the course material then instructors should ensure that they are doing their part to keep students updated on their progress.

Bronzel,
Yes, and more so than discouragement is delays in posting/discussing grades can interfere with student progress. I believe that if I decide to give a quiz, exam, or other similar assessment, I also have a responsibility to prioritize getting the results back to students. Students need that feedback in order to know what areas may need improvement.

Barry Westling

Keeping your grade book up to date. Students want to know where they stand in the course. It is discouraging to students to have to wait while you enter and tally scores in the grade book.

Jeff ,
And without regular progress reports, students really have no certain way to determine where improvement may be needed.

Barry Westling

It helps them keep on track and give them encouragement

Shawn,
This is great, although I bet takes extra time. But students will always appreciate the effort their instructor puts in to provide immediate feedback.

Barry Westling

I give my students progress reports after every test, so the students are well aware of their attendance missed, test avg., lab scores, etc. this way they have no excuses at the end of their time in my class to say they had no idea. It should be their responsibility to keep up with this information, but I like to go that extra step as well to just help them out.
