Creating an evaluation system

stick to course objectives

Hi Anthony:
Evaluation system should address the course objectives and Student Learning Outcomes. Ideally, course material is thorougly covered. If the objectives have been taught, the evaluations should be derived from the objectives. The less obsure the better. Questions should be direct, clearly stated, with only one correct answer that is tied specifically to the question. Overall grading is better when a teacher uses a grading rubric to guide the asssignment of grades, because rubrics tend to be very objective.

Regards, Barry

Sticking to course objectives and sylalabus help to reduce anxiety. Questions can be asked and answered at the begining of the class regarding any fears.

Hi Doreen:
You're right - all evaluation systems should tie back to the learning objectives for the course. Balancing how much weight each component contributes to the overall grade.

Regards, Barry

I feel that course objectives are important in letting students know what is expected from them in order to master the course content. An evaluation system allows the instructor to place emphasis on particular material, in other words the objectives. however, some objectives require rote learning while others involve critical thinking and reasoning. In my evaluation of student performance i put more emphasis on critical thinking objectives anf therefore these objectives carry more weight when it is time to evaluate them. Hence, I will utilize oral exams for complex material and this type of evaluation is given more points whereas, rote information will be evaluated with quiz format and the quizzes will be worth a lot less points.
