extra credit
i allow my students to earn extra credit in the first few weeks of class and in order to have it applied to their final grade they must have 90%attendance in the course
Hi Cindy:
Some institutions have moved away from allowing the use of extra-credit due to some issues that arise.
If a student can pass a course without demonstrating an understanding of the primary concepts, that may end up resulting in angry feelings from other students who have worked hard to earn a solid grade.

I love the idea of using the attendance as a guide to extra credit. I have never allowed a student to do extra credit to pass a class but have had them do it for a grade from a B to an A in a very few circumstances.
I like that idea of having to have a certain attendance percentage in order to take advantage of extra credit! I always have one or two students who are repeat offenders of missing class, and don't feel it's fair to the rest of the class who is there every week, working hard. Thanks for the idea!
I allow my students to get extra points when I want them to learn material that there is no other way around it but memorizing!
I am new as an adult instructor and I have never given the opportunity for extra credit up to this point. The diversity of student ability varies so much and I struggle with how to remain fair. So far, I have stuck closely with college policy and haven't deviated from the plan. Also, I do concentrate on supporting student achievement within the assigned requirements. Luckily, I haven't had students ask for extra credit opportunit yet!
I agree that extra credit can be a difficult thing to decide if you should do it or not. I think that some students depend on it way to much and that isn't the purpose of extra credit. It should be there when you need a little boost not to help you pass the course by making your F a D!
I also struggle with how to give extra credit. If I give too much, I'm afraid students will start to depend on the extra credit. however, before quizzes or exams if we do a review in class, I will award extra credit to those who give correct answers.
That is a great idea. I give my students opportunities to do extra credit activities such as look up the answers to questions students ask in class as well as extra credit questions on tests. I always struggle with how to apply it in a fair and appropriate manner.
