I prefer to give midterm grade checks instead of doing bi-weekly grade checks because bi-weekly occurs a lot more often, and grades change so much each two weeks. While I make sure my grades are up to date anyway, if students are missing assignments and havent turned in their work,for them to hear this one time during the midterm versus every two weeks, it just seems like students take low midterm grades much more seriously than bi-weekly grades.

I find that by letting the students get frequent updates, as far as where they stand in class, is a great motivational tool for both the students and myself.

By letting the students know where they stand it keeps them in the know and aware of their progress. It also adds an opportunity to speak to them about tutoring or study aids for their self improvement.
