I equate extra credit with bonus questions on exams. I like giving situations that they need to evaluate, using the content of the material from the exam. As mentioned in ED105, I also like asking students to discuss something they
learned in the unit that was not asked on the
exam!

Hi Gary:

Some institutions have moved away from allowing the use of extra-credit due to some issues that arise.

If a student can pass a course without demonstrating an understanding of the primary concepts, that may end up resulting in angry feelings from other students who have worked hard to earn a solid grade.

I am going to try awarding extra credit at the end of each of my tests where I ask the student to write something he or she learned from the material that was not asked on the test. That way the student is still working on core material and improves his or her test grade without compromising any standards.

After taking this course, I started using the idea of granting an extra question at the end of each test, asking the student to provide information that he or she gained from the material that was not tested for. I have used this on my latest test, and after I explained the concept, half the students forgot to take advantage of that, but I was happy to award extra points to the students who did use it, and I informed my classes I would be using that approach to each of my tests for the rest of this term. It will be interesting to see how this works out as the students get used to it.

Working in a post secondary school and in most schools, you have a number of students that are single parents and life in itself is a challenge thus retaining the information could present itself "unworthy".Not to make excuses or to take knowledge lightly. I beleive that to much is given much is required. If I don't understand like the next man does -I loose out! Well we all learn differently and retain information differently. Extra credit allows students to work indepedently or together in a small setting and to do research that will allow them to have an focussed understanding.

I wish I could recognize my superior students who do far more in class than what is required by offering them extra credit, but the truth is they are probably already going to get an A anyway, so extra credit will not help them at all. Also, the other students who want to perform something for extra credit are really trying to avoid a part of the curriculum they don't like and replacing it with something more palatable, and thus avoid working on the very thing they need to work on which is the course objectives. So even though extra credit sounds like a good idea, the students who would benefit the most from it, which are those earning a minus grade who could move it to a plus grade, are the least interested in earning it.

Extra credit should not be the soul grade of a students final grade. This shows that a student did not do any work or was lazy and just got extra credit because they knew they were failing and out of necessity made up the work. I don't think that is very fair to the other students who worked hard. Extra credit should be graded at a lesser value.
