I am not an advocate of extra credit. In my opinion the student that wants extra credit is traditionally late, unmotivated, and looking for a way to pass by getting another way out. If a student wants to get more material, I am happy to work with them one on one to give them more than what is required. I really don't think extra credit helps the student learn, it just helps them pass.

This practice should be prohibited. Few years ago, several of my colleagues gave extra credits right and left. The result was speaking for itself. The student had an overall grade average over 3.8 but failed the Board exam 2, 3 and sometimes 4 times. Obviously, the process was wrong. We changed that practice over a year ago. No extra credits period. The distribution of grades looks much better and the students who are graduating pass the Board exam.
The best method I have seen for use of extra credit is to offer it for activities that help increase student learning (attending Live Chats, particpating in discussion forums, working extra Homework problems). There is a limited amount of extra credit each week and then the total possible extra credit for the term can amount to 2% (for example) of the overall course grade. In that way, borderline students who just fell fractionally short of one grade can be rewarded for their efforts by receiving the higher grade as a result of the extra work they did in class.
