School policy

My school has a crystal clear "no extra credit" policy. Students still come to me to ask for extra credit and I quote the policy. The student gives me some kind of attitude or an eyeroll. Later I find out other teachers are giving extra credit. To put it bluntly, this sucks.

In my opinion, EC is not a good way to measure learning (I just don't give it). I understand how it could ligitimately be used to alter grades, but that has probably helped little to contribute to learning.

extra credit is up to the instructors at our school. I assign it if enough of the students need so I can be fair when is it being assigned and it really helps those that need it. otherwise I don't give it when not required.

That's a kind gesture. For me, I can't get into EC. It seems to me we teach for the students to learn. By necessity we have to give graded assignments. But the point is not the grade butEC altogether.

Many institutions and many more teachers will not award EC. Yet, I understand policies vary by institutions and individual instructors.

Extra credit can be difficult,some instructors give extra credit work to make up for missing a task or assignment, I beleive extra credit is when all tasks and assignments are in,then a student can go above and beyond what was expected for the class, not to fill in for anything missed.

Yeah, sorry to hear that happens. Solidarity among the faculty is very necessary to hold to the standards. And students will be so persistent if they feel they have even the slightest chance to get the teacher to give in.

As an encouragement, one way to offset being "the heavy", is to be absolutely supportive of students who are trying their best and recognized as "that teacher is tough, but fair and very helpful". I want that on my tombstone.
