Creating an evaluation system

The evaluation system we created is working well in our campus.
For the didactic portion, I assigned:
10% for attendance, quizzes and attitude grade
50% for long exams-minimum of 3 per module
40% for final exam

For the laboratory portion, I assigned:
40% for lab book and a powerpoint presentation
60% for competencies -a one in one practical exam

Final Grade is 60% taken from didactic grade
40% taken from Lab. grade
Thanks for giving me an idea of how to give extra credits for those absent during exams or with failing grades.

Melvin,
I'm glad this works for you. I think an essential consideration is does the grading system adequately and accurately measure learning. That should be how we base how effective whatever system we develop is working or not.

The school that i am teaching at uses similar grading system.

10% Class Assignments
20% Skill Assignments
10% Project
40% Final
20% Quiz

Works Well

Hi Shirley,
Right. Of course there is always a "Need to know" and a "Nice to know" material provided in textbooks. A teacher may not assign all of the available material but that doesn't mean students can't use it on their own, for additional understanding, additional review, or just because some students want to know more than is required. It's always refreshing to know some students take their learning very serious and do more than is required.

I agree. Students then know what material they are responsible for. In my day it was know everything in the chapter.

Hi Shirley,
As far as creating a system, it seems to me that relating the evaluation has to be based on the course content, topics, and student learning objectives (SLO's). As teachers, we are always in a safer zone when we teach to the objectives, then test on the same material.

It depends on the course. That is the wonderful thing about electronic grading. You decide before the class begins and spell it out in the syllabi. Then put grades in and the grades are calculated immediately. Since we have gone electronic the students are not in our offices constantly hounding us about what grade they have. They know almost immediately and can act upon it, while they can do something about their grade. The old way of waiting until midterm and final is so antiquated.

Hi Romeo,
Great! Creating the weights of an evaluation system are important, requires thought, planning, and alignment with the student learning outcomes and course objectives. For me, the closer these are aligned the better results a teacher will have with testing, grading, and ultimately, student learning.
