Extra credit

The extra credit we offer on some exams just makes up for a question you might have missed. I would like to be able to offer something to the students that have to work harder than others but we have no policy for that. I just give them verbal praise for there progress. It seems to help but doesn't change there grade.

Aarti,
An essay question that has little overall value but gives some leeway in perhaps raising (or lowering) a test grade is a good way to shaow flexibility while maintaing a fixed gradinf schedule.

I usually give an extra credit question at the end of a test. Some students are good at writing short answers as opposed to taking a multiple choice test. It help them make up points lost on the test.

James,
Verbal praise is not unimportant, and students tend to remember these "gems" they've received from their teachers as much as their grades. As to EC, it may assist with points and grades, but really doesn’t help the student or contribute to learning.
