Grading late Assignments

What should be the point criteria when a student turns in an assignment late? Lets consider late any time after the class was dismiss the day the assignment was do.

Suzie,
Perhaps this is useful. Each instructor and institution has to decide what works best for their classes.

My institution has flexibility on late assignments. I do not take any late assignments. However, part of my grading system allows for students to "rewrite" 2 of 5 large assignments and I average the score. Should a student miss the deadline the first time, they can "rewrite".

I find that going over this assignment policy on the first day of class and then mentioning it throughout the rest fo the semester helps the students to understand what is expected of them.

Arlene,
I think is is fair -- and appropriate in deference to the students that did complete assignments and assessments on time. It would be important to have these guidelines in both print and verbally discussed on the first day to avoid any sentiments of "arbitrary grading". I think most instructors downgrade some percentage when an exam us taken after the fact.

I also will give 0 credit for homework not turned in. Not fair to the students who are actually trying. For missed test, the % given is less no matter what the score they received

Ricardo,
Much of this probably has to do with school, classroom, or instructor policy. For me, homework is due at the beginning of the class (no credit after the fact). Our school policy is no make-up exams at all for any reason the student missed. For other projects and assignments, there are due dates, and milestones. No penalty for a missed milestones, but I down grade a percentage based on the time delayed past the due date. This is spelled out in the syllabus and discussed the first day of class.
