be organized

always be on time and organized, it will make the class smoother ans students will begin to gain respect for the instructors role.

Hi Seema:

The problem with consistent disorganization from an instructor is the potential loss of credibility with the students, and the message it may send, which is “I’m not concerned enough about your learning to be organized for you”.

Being prepared is very important. I try to plan fun educational activities for every class to enhance core concepts. I have found that a majority of my students love to learn through games. Jeopardy is a great one and a good way to review material. Doing this takes time and preparation.

Hi Jean:
Our expertise is what we were hired for, and that doesn't mean "winging it". Good classes take time, effort, thought, and planning. We may have education and training , or lots of expoerience, or both. But without the preparation the class will less than wonderful - probably boring.

Preparation can provide and exciting class, led with enthusiasm and and underlying excitement about the material, smoothly run, and all resoucres readily available. This is the kind of class that a student will remember.

I agree- I sometimes wonder how some faculty members just arrive to the campus right before class begins without any papers or briefcases and feel good about their preparation. i spend much time prior to each class even if have taught the course numerous times to reflect on various ways I can present the material to the present class. handouts are done usually the day before so that I am available to students 15-30 minutes prior to class starting.

Hi Dominic:
Organized teachers really get it together, it just doesn't happen sort of automatically. Time, effort, thought, planning, and coordination all go into preparing an above average class.

And student will note when the teacher is ready or is unprepared for class, even if they don't comment, they'll notice. I think most teachers want to feel they've taken charge of their class(s). Preparation and orgaization are the key to assuring that will be the case.

When You're organized it sets the stage for your class. IF you're NOT THAT TOO sets the stage....

Hi Lucille:
Organization demonstrates time and effort has preceded the course, sets the tone for expectations in the class, and provides guidence and direction for students that to follow. I believe most students want to know how to do the best they can in the class.

Organization also provides for clearer, smoother classes as all anticipated resources are available, and students will feel the class is more relaxed and the teacher is at ease as classs is conducted.

I agree, always be organized when going into a class. We also like to pring on colored paper so the students can find the info quicker when they put it into their notebooks.

Hi Victoria:
Using all the resources you bhave available is good - and students are definitely one form of resource.

Be ready for class is the best example of being organized, and students will notice when that's the case. Appearing ealy, getting resources and media together, and being available to answer questions helps convet=y that feeling that the teacher is ready to go. It takes planning.

Hurrying about just before class, making copies, shuffling papers, these things interefere with students feeing as free to ask questions because they don't want to bother the teacher.

A better way is to have all materials ready, topics flowing one to to the next, relaxed and comfortable teacher - an environment like that makes the students more relaxed too. and may impact student performance.

Hi Maryalice:
I believe students pick up on if the teacher is prepared, and when they are, the class runs smoother, students are more relaxed and comfortable about the learning environment, and the class is more enjoyable for all.

I try to get the students to help me organize for the class by passing out handouts, etc. (not passing out graded student work, that'd be a FERPA violation). Because I teach in a paralegal / legal secretary program, I tell them this is part of learning how to support your boss. I ask them what I need to be more organized about, and ask for suggestions on how to get there. It's been an amazingly good experience for me -- I'm much more organized than I used to be!

Being organized sends a message to students. It gives them the understanding that in order to get a job done in a timely matter being organized plays a big role. Organization give structure to any situation.

Hi Richard:
Timeliness is none way of demonstrating preparedness. But just being on time, (or earlier) without a sound lesson plan, resources and media ready, and an idea of how to sequence the various topics, the prepared teacher can still appear unprepared.

Even good teachers who know their topics well can be the victims of appearing unprepared. So, it is so important that time to think ahead and plan be dialed into the time requirements in conducting classes.
