Get students involved

Ask your students what they want out of the class. Find out where they would like to go if a field trip is an option, and who they would like to see come and speak to the class as far as a guest speaker. You would be amazed how many students have relatives or friends that work in the same or similar field that they are going to school for and you can utilize their contacts for a guest speaker or perhaps a field trip.

Hi Cristin:
Good activity you've come up with.

One source you tap into is the successful staff, faculty, administration, and even students taht can share a few examples of what has worked nd what is less than successful. These resources are right there under your nose, if you seek them out. I've found most successful people don't mind talking about their successes.

We do not have the option of "field trips @ our school, But we have Sucess Seminars the students can attend.
they are offered to all students& they are people or businesses that do 45min lecture to students offering them of employment oppertunites, Math skills, resume making ect.
Alot of students get inspired to go & seek out the places to work from them.
I also offer to all my students one on one discussion on "what do they want to do when they finish school?" This projects the student to look forward& stay focused on staying in school & finishing their goal.
I want them to check out & phically go to the location that they want to work at. This also helps w/ anxiety.

Hi LaTonya:
Great ideas. Not every teacher has the lattitude you have, but students will definitely benefit from those you suggested.

Engaging students with guest speakers can be quite inspirational. And the field trip is also memorable. Students remember these experiences more than the lessons sometimes!.

This happens because it relates directly to the field of study and work setting the students are being prepared for. It can be a real wake-up call to some. Others, who have only vague ideas about what the profession entails often get very motivated and may begin to take their studies more seriously. That'd be a cool thing, anytime!
