Fieldtrips In Real Time

As I prepare for a new quarter, I look at a class outline and think of what types of fieldtrips can I bring the students on that will highlight class material and be in real time with real situtations and decisins needing to be made. I contact my network to see if there is anyone or anyplace out in the community that can give us this experience. I try to set the fieldtrips up four to six weeks in advance. I have found that facilities appreciate the proactiveness of my scheduling.

Hi Marsha:

Field trips and guest speakers are a great way to renew interest in the material you’ve been discussing in class. It gives the student’s a chance to speak with people (possibly in the field they are training for), and gain a different and new perspective about the topics at hand.

Also, they might get the chance to ask some questions about the topics you’ve discussed and get a better understanding overall.

Hi Carrie:
Field trips can be a great way to renew a student's interest in the topics you've been discussing. AND, it can possibly give the student a chance to speak to someone in the field and get a completely new perspective.

We also encourage job shadowing. The hospital in town allows even the general public to job shadow a phlebotomist, an x-ray tech, a billing person, a respiratory therapist, etc. This can give the student a real close look at the job expectations. Give extra points for those who participate.

I like how you plan so far in advance for your field trips. I agree that the best time to start thinking about field trips is before the new quarter starts so there is plenty of time to schedule them.
