Students need to understand that High School courses and Job Training courses are very different. Career field trips help to keep the student focused on their goals and to keep the student on task in the classroom to accomplish those goals once they see where they might like to work and what it takes to get there.

When I have a guest speaker, one of the greatest benefit is that the students start to understand what it takes to be a part of our industry. I lecture and demonstrate during class and towards the end of the quarter students tend to get a little exhausted from all the information. I tend to have a guest speaker towards the end of the quarter to renew their passion. Having a guest speaker also proves to the students that I have a great understanding of the subject.

Some institutions have moved away from allowing the use of extra-credit due to some issues that arise.

If a student can pass a course without demonstrating an understanding of the primary concepts, that may end up resulting in angry feelings from other students who have worked hard to earn a solid grade.
