Teacher style

Examining myself has been a great improvement tool for me. I have to be brutally honest in my evaluation.

Jean,
Great. I see new ways and spins of this sort and that sort all the time, kinda like fashion - it's always changing, but there's really nothing new. It'll be interesting to see if this trend stands the test of time.

Thanks for the information, I intend to read it and determine if some of the methods suggested can work in my setting.

Jean,
If you Google the topic, there are multitudes of educators discussing the concept. I've included two just to give a "for instance".

where can I find this resouce? yes, I would like to read it.

Jean,
Sometimes it's a hard thing to not be the "all knowing, talking head", but really, with creative activities, students can learn on their own when guided properly. There is an idea called "the flipped classroom", which if you care to read more about, basically has the student doing everything on their own. Interesting reading.

Thank you, there is so much to learn as an instructor and areas where improvement is needed. I love the challenge and the opportunity. I am begining to let my students do more individual and group presentations. I also let the student audience fill in the gaps. I find this method not only motivates them, it makes them use cognitive thinking and it enhances their knowledge and understanding. This method is a way for me to step back.

Jean,
As instructors we want our students to learn, and it's a natural feeling to want to give more than is needed. What I've learned is to follow my course objectives, use variety to deliver my message, and promote student-led instruction. The students will get all they need

I still consider myself a new instructor, and I am still trying to evaluate myself and determine my style. I see a little of my self in the different styles presented, but I have difficulty in presenting information in a way that draws the student in and allows them to come to an understanding or Aha moment. I think i give too much information.

Nick ,
Wow, so true. One look can be very revealing. Of course we are our own worst critic -- sometimes that can be a good thing. This is a great exercise and if the resources to do it are available I'd certainly recommend it.

I've found video taping your lectures is a great way to evaluate you classroom performance. The image in your head and the one on the screen are often different
