What is seen first hand is usually remembered always. Therefore, a memorable field trip can add significantly to a students education.

Field trips add excitement to a course. They are a pleasant break from the didactic environment. Students are exposed to "real life" situations that can provide the "why" to the "what" they are learning in the classroom setting. I enjoyed the field trip opportunities I had during my education immensely.

For me, there is only so much students can gain from the constraints of a classroom or laboratory setting. When students visit external sites that have some relationship to the career they're training for, it provides the opportunity for many "ah ha" moments. Visualizing themselves in a similar work setting can be a terrific way to motivate while educating our students.
