The "Power" of Power Point
I really enjoy creating Power Point slide presentations for the students. I try to make
them as informative, interesting and entertaining as possible. I will often add some tasteful humor which catches the students off-guard and is always very well received, and breaks up the monotony of lecture. When I have the students do their presentations for class, they always add a little humor in their P P presentations as well. Must be working!
it really is a versatile tool. the humor bit is excellent.
Hi Mark:
It's interesting that there needs to be humor because there's monotony in the first place. I know your meaning and am not critizing at all. In fact, I think the more creative a PPT slide is, the more beneficial it is to the student.
Just for example, suppose you had to limit your lecture to six slides only. What information would these slides contain? You'd probably find that only essential, key points would be listed, the rest coming from you in illustrations, examples, case studies, discussions, students comments, reference to the textbook, white board, handouts - probaly these and tens of other learning strategies. The PPT slides themselves would not be boring because the essential information formed the basis for the topic.
So, I think we need to think of PPT like any other tool, it has a purpose, not to dominate or become the focus, but to facilitate learning using multiple media. My opinion.
