Blackboard usage

Greetings,

One thing that I have found very beneficial in my usage of the blackboard/whiteboard is to not turn my back to the students. I try to face the class and write their thoughts on the board. This seems to keep them engaged while I am attempting to work toward group agreement about a certain topic.

I also use multiple color markers when writing on the board to help keep the topic colorful and easy to follow.

Hi James:
No matter what media or presentation tool we use (ie whiteboards), using a variety of approaches is considered the most effective method by most educational enthusiasts. The reason? It facilitates every type of learning style.

Hi John:
One good thing about whiteboards is that when used with other media, we are using a variety of presentation techniques, which can help to address multiple learning styles.

I teach evening courses and I enjoy the day instructors leaving their blackboard/whiteboard writings up for me. My class enjoys reviewing the info, even if it's a tad out of sequence with our lessons.

I use colored markers when using the whiteboard. I like the previous post where it was noted that one should not turn their back to the class when writing and talking at the white board. I have a standing practice in my classes that if I talk to the whiteboard while writing on it; the class is supposed to call me on it. It adds humor to the class in addition to keeping me on my best behavior.

Hi James:
Colors add emphasis So does direct eye contact and engaging the class. Silence while your back is turned is good practice and and effective tool.
