pp presentations
I think power points are so valuable to both students and instructors to provide guide lines
Hi Chris:
On the otherhand, we can learn to avoid the pitfalls of ineffective presentation and create some really fun, robust material that adds to the learning environment.

Hi Josh:
A good follow up to this concept would be a question about giving effective PPTs. What types of pitfalls might be avoided, for example - its not considered effective to "read" slides to the student.

Hi Adam:
Instructors need to be careful with using ANY presentation media. We want to be sure to give EFFECTIVE learning sessions for our students, and there are several pitfalls that can be avoided with careful planning and attention to detail.

Hi David:
PPT has come a long way since it's first incarnation. It's very user friendly, and depending on how much time an instructor has to put into it, we can make some really interesting and professional looking presentations.

I find that there are only 2 good uses for powerpoint during a lesson. One is displaying images that are too complex or would take too long to draw. The other is serving as a page marker for students, in case they get distracted or leave the room for a moment. They can see exactly where they should be in their books.
I think powerpoint makes weak instructors. It provides a guideline for someone who is new but leads to instructors reading the powerpoint and not teaching or engaging the class in any meaningful way.
I agree that power point presentations are a very valuable tool for teaching. The following are a few things I like to do with my PPT presentations:
I make portions of it available on the student portal. This drives them to the portal which is something that we are trying to heavily promote at our campus.
I make it challenging enough to simply print out the info so they have to physically write out there notes.
it saves on printing costs and is better for the environment.
I feel that power points are truely a friend to the educational world. I have the worst hand writting in the world, I have always used a bulleted presentaion. I know go with a couple of bullets on each slide and run the slides as I do my oral presentation. I do not read the slides that is for the students as I give a broader and more elaborate presentattion with my speaking and some use of aniomation within the presentation. Wonderful LEARNING tool for my students
Yes, I have found that powerpoint presentations are very helpful in helping explain the lesson. Students seem to like this kind alternative way to help increse retention!
I agree the power pint presentation is a valuable tool in class room and learing how to use this to its full potential is key to your sucess as an instructor
