PP prsentation
PP prsentation of the book is help student to see and also make them ask question about the subject>
Robert,
I agree that PPT is probably overused, in general. What can be put on a slide that will result in critical thinking by the student, that can't be just as easily written on a white board, flip chart, hanout, or passage from a segment in the textbook? PPT is a tool, and like all tools, has a specific use. We don't need a hammer when a saw is called for.

All we have is powerpoint presentations
I try to use them as little as possible
Latasha ,
Good. I just like to emphasize PPT is a tool, and should not itself be the focus of attention. It's the information they provide, secondary to what the teacher or facilitator can provide, and supplemented with student discussion and comments.

I agree with Kimberly PPT do help student work through the chapter and also touches key points on what they need to study for.
Hi Julie:
An astute comment that should be rememberd by all of us us who teach.

I agree with limited use- many years of education occured without Powerpoint.
Hi Barbara:
I liked your "eyes closed" inference! PPT can be good and useful when applied appropriately. Reading slides is not good, of course. But good information can be contained in a lesson and the students can glean what they need. Some of my instructors just post their PPT lesson on the student portal, and it's the student's responsibilty to read (and retain) the information, as an example.
Regards, Barry
Students generally do not like power point presentations. As an instructor, I do not like them because they affect my interaction with the students. The lights are at least dimmed so there is some loss of eye contact. Eye contact is also lost because many students' eyes are closed.
I am careful about using power point too much in the classroom. I think the students are too conditioned to power point presentations and can tune them out. Limited use is better.
I think PPT are helpfull to the student when the slides have less than five bullets pre slides. In my experience fewere bullets with a cartoon beween a few slides helped the students.
wow i wish our book had such helpful tools. I make power points for every class. I also find it heplful to add in a lot of pics/diagrams and videos to capture the students attention.
I use the content of PP slides to present theory information and in the supplemental discussion I ask for and give application examples to illustrate the theory content. This helps students apply the information to real life.
I have taken many classes where the instructor uses PowerPoint and reads each and every slide to the class. There is no discussion and it is EXTREMELY boring.
I use PowerPoint in my classroom; however, I pick different slides from the presentation that I feel will be the most helpful to my students.
I combine the PPT presentation with lecture notes for the students to fill in during the lecture. This helps them work thru the chapter and to stay focused during the lecture. They then have the lectur notes, key terms and the study guide to work with for the midterm and the final.
I use many of the PowerPoint Presentations that come already created with the textbooks that are used for my courses. I love PowerPoint but I find my students tend to get bored with them. One way this can be overcome is by mixing their use with other forms of media. The book my students use for Introduction to Criminal Justice comes with PowerPoint Presentations with videos imbedded. This helps the students because it breaks up the lecture with a video related to the topic being covered. I wish all of the PowerPoints came like those.
I try to get each student involved by asking a question and then having another student answer the question and then getting the class involved in the discussion.
I believe it helps the student stay focused on the material and not get lost in thier mind staring into a book
