powerpoints

If you put to much into the power point the students will read the power point not listen to lecture

There is a balance point where it is easy to just read a list and lose the class. You can also only tell so many stories before you lose them.Another problem is allowing time to copy down notes and still hear the lecture material as you add input. These are where you as the instructor have to be flexible and adapt to the signals the class give you.We entertain and explain as we go leading to our sucess in transfering the information.

I like to keep Powerpoints simple with major points only. It is my job to further explian verbally or initiate discussion.

O would agree with all the responses that said reading the entire slide is a big off switch for students. We have a scripted reading course in our elementary school and I have the info from the book on the slides, that way I am not tied to the book and can move around the room. This also works in my math classes. I don't have to take the time to write examples on the baord and am free to walk and check students comprehension and attention.

Yes, I agree in most cases. However, I have found that if you close the light when you lecture on the slide, students tend to pay attention more to the explaination and wait in a small amount of anticipation for the coming of the next slide.

Yeah, We have our books copy the power point. I found that explaining in detail what it means and how it affects the system, the student has study material.

As a new instructor I have found that powerponts have given me an aid in keeping me focused with the subject material, I also use a lot of 'real life' experiences together with the powerpoint presentations in order to give a 'now'credibility to the presentation.

When I have been in the learner seat, someone reading to me off the PP is an absolute turn off. I am basically a visual learner, but Power Point must be used selectively or I just shut down.

I would have to agree with you on that. I think that death by PowerPoint is very discouraging to the students. They would rather see the instructor have know and expand on the points of the slide, than just read off the slides
