Using different tools to teach

By using different techniques I find that each student learns in different ways.

Brian,
Great plan! Variety in the delivery of course material makes for better retention of information, and may contribute to problem solving practice, as students begin to experience "aha moments" through connecting the dots when presented with different formats that circulate around a theme. Variety also allows the instructor to place emphasis where they choose, and make on the spot decisions about what they feel needs priority in the discussion at the moment.

I like a combination of PowerPoint,Whiteboard, and demonstrations in software that I'm teaching. This way, different types or students have some chance for success. This also breaks up any monotony in class. The amount of Powerpoint or whiteboard depends on the material, more text-heavy ideas will have a powerpoint designed to keep the students engaged. When teaching in software, I zoom in and out to make things easy to see as well as keep the lecture moving.

Katherine,
Class material may be routine for the instructor, but it's usually new information for the student. I try to use as much variety as possible also. And just when I think I have used every technique and activity to engage students, I'll read about another twist, or observe something one of the other instructors is using.

Using a variety of instructional material also helps the instructor. I have taught the same courses numerous times and I feel I am falling asleep after so many repeats! So I need to find other ways of presenting the material so it doesn't become ho-hum. Another advantage is if students do pass info on from class to class they never know what you might be doing this time!

Heather,
Great. I think students will be open to instructors that appear sincere, honest, and genuine in their relationship with students. And if they are open, we have an opening where we can provide more effective instruction.

I have found this true in my class. There have been times that I may try a new style of class activity. Sometimes it is a success, others it is not. But, if I state to my students that we tried and I will try something new next time, they seem appreciative that I put effort into it.I have found that if I admit what was obvious, my students see me as human and respect my accountability.

Roshally,
Every instructional tool has a specific purpose, similar to tools in other trades. Selecting and correctly using the right tools will make for effective class sessions.

Using different tools also help students relate to the materials presented more effectively.

Nancy,
From own experience I know I have had classes that were just arduous to get through, and I've experienced those that were immensely enjoyable. In both I learned, but the more enjoyable classes the instructor used a variety of learning tools that was like getting a full 7-course meal, satisfying me while taking care of my learning needs at the same time. We can provide this same kind of learning invironment for our students.

I agree that variety adds interest. Using different media, materials, and methods to teach not only keeps it interesting for the students but for the instructor as well.

Francine,
Instrustional tools are not unlike other kinds of tools - things that have a specific use with an intended purpose. Each activity or strategy we use that contributes positively to the students learning is well worth the effort to provide it. Variety helps keep students attention, and adds interest. That makes class enjoyable.

I encourage students to jump in with questions as I'm lecturing. Many times I use their questions as additions to the lecture next time I teach that subject. As an instructor, I sometimes get bored when teaching the same thing several times. If I'm bored certainly the students are as well. This is why I add video, current events, and visual aids to the teaching environment.

Danielle,
I agree that customizing our instructional strategies to match the student needs is important, and can make a significant difference in student learning outcomes.

Of course we learn that all students have different ways that they learn. And it is up to us as instructor to be crettive and learn our student and see what works best for the group. Of course you will have to change up to make it a fun learning experience for everyone.

Murielle,
Every technique, activity, or method we use can potentially open learning opportunities for our students. Variety adds interest, and different activitities help keep the students focus and attention.

Barry Westling

different students will learn different ways, by using a wide variety of teaching methods and medium, you give every student a better chance for success

Omesa,
Students ask questions when they are naturally curious. Therefore, it is important to provide a setting for that creates natural curiosity. Asking questions is the beginning to understanding.

Barry Westling

I agree using different techniques will help the students be more responsive and ask question.

Stacy,
Activities that reinforce or supplement discussion or lecture material are most always appreciated by students, even if they don't recognize the extra effort, time and planning an instructor may have put in to make that meaningful. So it's worth it and it helps students in their studies.
