Hi Aaron:

The best idea when selecting course material is to employ as many teaching styles as we can in order to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Selecting course content is a process all should appreciate. If too much is crammed into a short time, the students may not grasp all of it. In the same turn, if there is not enough then they feel like you have wasted their time. Getting the right amount may take a phase or two to get the amount to balance. When that happens, the class should gain a good flow.

Hi Lisa:

One technique that may work well is to divide up the students into groups, and have each group research one section of the subject matter, then have each group present to the whole class.

Give motivation to generate additional student interest. Selecting the course content helps to be able to complete their assignments or if the course content is excessive, only serve to unfocused the students rather than challenge them.

I use lots of classroom activities, group activities to keep the student engage, I take opportunities to attend seminars to learn more strategies on keeping the students learning

When selecting course content, you must first know your target audience and how it will affect they educational process.

I teach new students who are first time college students or re-entering for a new trade. I have to base course content to fit both types of students in order to accomplish the overall task in changing students behaviors and attitudes about learning.

Hi Nancy:
Absolutely right! In addition, the student who learns in multiple ways (usually the majority of the class) will have a stronger chance of retaining the information because they learned about it in many different ways.

Hi William:
This sounds like a great approach, and I (and probably others) would be interested on statistical feedback that shows how well it works in the form of outcomes.

Do you see good outcomes using this approach?

Hi Tom:
One way we can be consistently flexible to meet the student needs is by asking for reiteration from the students in the form of class discussions. If we see the students are grasping a new topic, we may be inclined to make some kind of change in the presentation.

Hi Crystal:
Your comment reminds me of the value of keeping a journal of some sort to help the instructor remember what worked and what didn't, so improvements can be made to all areas the next time through.

Hi Barry:
Great! For me, "sufficient" content means all that is required to meet course and student learning objectives. There can be more, but the basic, essential content has to be there.

Using building a house as an example, shoddy workmanship and not meeting codes might exemplify non-sufficient.

Meeting all codes, safe structual foundations, and functional design might illustrate the house that is sufficient (comfortable and meets all the needs of the occupants).

Then, you might have executive, luxury or extravagant type homes. These provide residential structures that, really are in excess of what one really needs. Not that they're not desirable or useable, but consistent with my example, they are beyond sufficiency.

So, as long as the essential, necessary content is provided, anything beyond that is adjunctive to what's needed.

Because of the way that my courses are setup, I don't always have many choices I can make in content. However I have found that including the websites, citations and references of related material on each ppt screen... it allows my students to see not only where my research came from, but gives them direction in where to draw references for their own individual projects. And in Forum Discussions, I also come prepared with articles on a selection of topics, as well as websites where they can get the entire article to reference for their forum projects as well.

How does an instructor select sufficient course content in the first 2 or 3 class sessions since he/she does not know much about the students yet? Does the students have enough background knowledge if the course is a low level course?

Great way to help students learn and understand. I am new to teaching and find you suggestion very helpful.
