Typically, if there is a subject that is irrelevant to their success or may not benefit them in any way it should not be presented. Even if the topic is considered general knowledge. If i t is considered general knowledge, then they will surely absorb it breifly after entering the field. Which may be considered maximizing the time that you have with students, escecially when that time may be brief.

A common mistake instructors make is to select course content that does not help the student reach his objectives.I call it "nice to know" information but does not fit the "need to know" criteria. Another mistake is the instructor will select content without looking at it from the students perspective as far as ease of understanding, the instructor feels because he understands it that the student will too. Another situation is when the instructor tries to teach content that he himself does not fully understand and does not know how to answer the questions which arise.Another mistake is the content may not be in a logical sequence or requires some prerequisite training.

Hi Stacy:

One idea when selecting course material and media is to try employ as many teaching styles as we can in order to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is generally considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Not following the syllabus and presenting the information that the school wants you to that follows their format. This has been a problem. There is a syllabus for a reason, with course outline, page numbers, Et cetera.

I think one mistake made in selecting course content, especially with those new to teaching, is thinking that all material in the textbook is equally important and should be covered in great detail. Due to time constraints, course objectives, and allowing time for interactive exercises, there are some modules of the textbook that can either become reading assignments or treated more lightly during class discussions.

My biggest challenge is selecting the right level of information. I am a licensed professional with an advance degree teaching associate degree coursework. I am always having trouble finding the right balance of how to challenge them and give them their money's worth versus overwhelming them.
