I agree. Students like stories, and including situations or past good (or bad) experiences often convey an important point to be made in a way thats memorable and interesting.

The classroom is so unpredictable and it's great to have back-ups. Even when I think class will go as planned, it always surprises me!

Yes, observe and adjust. That's actually a scientific process, and it works in most cases. I say most because when you're dealing with humans, there are variables that can't be counted on to be consistent.
