Pre-Testing
I think this helps those students who may have had a tough time with the reading portion of the class and tees up the material that I present.
Hi Marlene:
Pre-testing can show you where the student is at academically, and may also provide you the chance to see what kind of learner the student is.

I have just started to incorporate pre-testing in some of my lessons. Will continue to evaluate to see the effects of same.
Hi Deandra:
You've got the process down. It sounds like it's working for you. Not all teachers use pretesting, but those that do find it's benefits useful.

I find pre testing helps the students feel that they have a chance to find their weak area's for a more structure studying. And helps me as the instructor find my weak portion of my lecture and gives me the ability to refince and review area's not learned by students
Hi Hannah:
Pretesting is a tool that provides a method for the teacher to get an idea of where the class as a whole is performing or beginning a course.
It's advantages are giving the students a preview of what they may need to study, for the teacher, a base from which to posssibly make small adjustments in in the curriculum to put more emphasis where it's needed, and perhaps measure the teachers own performance in meeting the course objectives.
It can also be used to measure end of class performance against beginning of class knowledge.

I am looking forward to teaching College Math soon. As a new instructor I want to make sure I don't fall into the same mistakes I have seen past math teachers make. One of the biggest mistakes was assuming that all students had at least a Geometry level knowledge of mathematical concepts; however this was not the case. I think the use of a very basic pre-test will help me determine a good starting point for the class to make sure all are able to follow along and be successful in the class.
Hi Joseph:
Well, it may be reading for you, and it may be sme other aspecyt for another teacher in another class.
Nonetheless, the benefit of pretesting it allows the teacher to identify what areas need reinforcement or emphasizing, while possibibly not spending as much ime on areas students seem to know pretty well at the outset.
