I definitely pretest. I then try to tailor the classes to the levels I have in my room. I also let the students know that are more than welcome to come to me if they are having problems with my style or if they have suggestions on things to do in class that is related.

Many instructors find that some analysis of why their students are not performing as expected. Sometimes, it;s delivery, or media, or methods, or too much information. These are but a few examples to ponder.
