Pre-test
Since our academy does not offer pre- pretest, we find it hard to know how much of an education they have until maybe mid course. However, we offer a pre-test on the material that they will be learning. It's not till later that we learn that some cannot comprehend just the readng or math to say. This makes teaching a little difficult. I do not rush through the material. My quote is "leave no one behind" but sometimes I have no choice when its 2 days later and they still have not gotten the material. I do an early evaluation and have the Program Director involved to help out.
Hi Diedra,
Sometimes it’s difficult to keep all students caught up because as you’ve indicated, not everyone learns at the same pace.
One effective method for those that have the opportunity is to recommend students form study groups together.
Sometimes, when others in the class get together with each other, it assists everyone in that group with comprehension of the material.

Hi Traci:
Delivering course content in stages, graduating from basic to intermeditae, to advanced is a fine idea. Using the pretesting model to identify where the emphasis is needed could prove valuable, if you don't know what level your students are performing at the beginning of the course.

It is a great idea to assess the students prior to developing an instructinal plan if possible. I try to make sure to use the simplest terms possible when teaching and then teaching them the "big word" for the same subject, telling the students the "big words" will be on their board exams and will help them to be more articulate when discussing subjects in their field. Point is...I teach them vocabulary as I'm lecturing along-even with terms that may seem intermediate.
Hi Rhonda:
Pretesting helps everyone, especially the teacher, but ultimately the student. By adjusting curruculum to best suit the students needs, needed information will end up with more emphasis.

This is a good idea. I have students that have to have accomodations also. I have to assist them and find ways to get them to go after the material and learn it instead of trying to feed it to them. If there is an issue, I ask them to look up a topic and write me just one paragraph in their words so I know they understand it. Pretesting on my own material might be just the thing to help me the varying levels of learning.
