A lot of breaks.

I must agree with you. This is a big problem in our school especially for the night students and I implement lots of activities moving back and forth from the dental lab to the classroom and I also give the students interactive projects to "wake them up!"

I have students that fall asleep in class and then tell me after class that they can't take the test or quiz because I "was going too fast".

Students who (out of necessity) have to work the night shift then come to school really should be commended for their commitment to improve their lives.

I would keep that motivation and the prospect of the goal of of successful career in the forefront of every topic, as in "this is what you're here for".

I would also provide or integrate a lot of lab interespersed with lecture or discussion. Keeping the student both physically and mentally active should diminish some of the sleepliness some students may experience.
