Pretests
Pretesting is a great way to find where you will have to me more detailed in the content you present.
David,
Yes, and also pretesting gives students a heads up about what's coming in the instructional sessions ahead. Diligent students may even begin to put in some extra study beforehand, knowing they want to be prepared. Pretesting is good for everyone.

I completely agree with this. With a pretest we can see where we need to concentrate on the most or if we can skip over some meterial they may already know.
Hi Alexis:
We can certainly divide a pre-test into difficulty level, but I think using just one is the idea as ameans to guage where a student is at the beginning of the course.

Hi Regina:
Pretests can also help show the instructor what type of student learner they have, making lesson planning more effective.

Hi Mary:
Also, these tools are great in that they may reveal what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning more effective.

Hi Benetta:
Another thing pretests are great for is that they can show us what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning that much more efficient.

Hi Kathleen:
Another great use of these is that they can show you what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning more effective.

Hi Michael:
In addition, these might help you see what kind of student learner you have, making for more efficient lesson planning.

I agree with you, Benetta, I find that students tend to "step up to the plate" more often when a pretest is issued.
I think that pre-testing in general is a good idea. How do you prepare the test? Beginner, intermediate, advanced or some of all of those? I worry about the comparisons the students tend to engage in between themselves, and if I will loose any students in the process.
Yes a pretest can really guide you where the students are standing at the start of the course. This helps to guide you for the direction you will take the conent of the course.
i use a pretest at the beginning of the quarter and then repeat the test after any review material so that the students can see that they have filled in any gaps in their knowledge.
I agree with both comments. Pretest help the teacher and the student know the students level of understanding the material about to be covered in class. Some students actually use the pretest as a measurement for how much study time they will allow for the class content.
It also gives you a great starting point for your course so the students never have to feel they are not smart enough to complete the work.
