Student assesments
I believe it is true in some situations that admissions has a responsibility to put a student where they are best suited. That does not always happen. Usually within the first couple of weeks the student usually drops, unless you give them a reason this course might well suit them. An assessment by the instructor might help, as well as, some personal one on one time with the student.
Martha,
How wonderful! Conveying encouragement and support costs nothing yet can yield the trust and self confidence many students need. I love reading inspiring posts such as this.

Sometimes I think just a little one on one talk will help you learn what is going on and it maybe fears holding them back. I have a student like this and I keep telling her she can do it. I tell her I know she can and she'll come in and say I studied hard for you and she'll pass every time.
