our goal in educating

Prepare more than enough material. It might flow easily and better than expected to students who grasp the content and clear understanding of the subject.

Hi Margaret:
Great! I think when teachers teach to meet and exceed their course objectives, they are giving their students the keys to success in the work setting. We can always give more, and usually do. But staying close to those objectives will provide the best assurance the needed skills and knowledge will be gained.

Regards, Barry

Students need to learn the current marketable skills/knowledge and also ba able to learn additional changes in their field based on new technology or discoveries. Objectives need to support those skills/knowledge.

Hi Margaret:
I think if course objectives are met, and the test covers course objectives, there shouldn't be too much problem. I agree we can always add in our instructional phase, but ultimately we need to assure to what degree the student did (or di not) meet course objectives.

Some of our courses ahve prepared final exams and faculty complain about having to 'teach the test'. As Dean, I challenge the faculty that the minimum is the exam material. They then realize that they can make the lessons more colorful and no longer view the prepared final in a restrictive manner.

Hi James:
Good thoughts! In a myriad of ways, transfering our expert knowledge of a given topic is one goal that should be included in that list, too.

Is to present the class with factual information, access to added information,an explanation of all information, and a practical working knowlrdge for an understanding of the information given.

It is nice for the students to have access to the "extra" content as well whether it be included at the end of a PP presentation or as handouts in the library.
