Hi Rosamond:
Pretesting is helpful, but not necessarily needed for every class. I use it when there's new or unfamiliar material, or when I need to know where to place more emphasis in a class when there is limited time.

Regards, Barry

It helps you gauge were a students skill levels at. It shows what content needs to be focused on before you can start the more advanced courses of study.

i completely agree on pretest's. It is a back door to the knowledge that the student already has and you as an instructor can focus on their weakness

A pretest wll help an instructor determine how much her students have retained and determine the basis for further instruction on certain areas. This will be a great tool for determining test content.

For me, pretesting will give me an idea as to what the students may already know. It will also help me with presenting new information in such a way that the students will be able to comprehend and apply it to their chosen career field.

Hi Derbe:
I like pretesting but don't do it every class. It's most helpful when I don't know the students, their level of learning, of what to see where to place more emphasis when time is tight (when is it not?).

Hi Barbara:
I don't pretest every class; only when the students or information is brand new and I need to get a barometer of where students are at in their prior learning and as a class as a whole.

The benefits I get is knowing where to place emphasis, and where time may not need be spent (or as much time). Students usually don't mind pretesting because I don't grade these assessments. A few times, I've used the same test as both a pre and post test, in order to show students how much information we've covered or how far they've come.

it helps you find out where students knowledge is at.

Yes, it helps to evaluate the students and gives you a starting point on your area of teaching.

A pretest is a very effective tool in developing a plan for instruction.

If an introductory course is being presented to advanced learners, they may be bored from the outset.

The pretest will present me with a benchmark from which to begin the development of lesson plans.

Knowing what type of learners the students are is also a barometer that I use so that I am sure to reach all students with the methodologies I choose and implement in a class.

Basic comprehension of reading instructions, case scenarios comes out in pretests.

It helps to know how many of your students are strong/weak in a given subject area and then adjust your speed, depth and breadth of instruction on that particular area accordingly.

This is not something I have done in the past, but look forward to trying. It is always helpful to know where your students are at, and I can see great value in pretesting for specific skills/knowledge. I can then tailor the assignments and projects to build areas that are needed.

pre-test can help the instructor have an idea of what level the students is at. These test also help the instructor plan for the students learning activities.

Pre-testing has the advantage of showing the instructor where they student is currently and how far they've progressed throughout the course. It also helps in having to change or alter the course so that more students are engaged.

Pretests give the instructor a foundation on which to build the course. If you start the course on a level that is too high or difficult for the students, they will become frustrated. If you start it too low or simple, they will become bored. It gives you a baseline of abilities for the students.

It allows me to identify potential barriers to th estudents learning process.

Hi Chris:
Another thing pretests are great for are they can help identify what kind of student learner you have making lesson planning more effective.

Hi Michael:
Pretests are also helpful to show you what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning more effective.
