Using Pretest

I agree pretest is a good tool to know where new students stand in the class. The instructor can work according with students.Status assessments are also important, this tells the progress of a student.

Beatrice,
Yes, this is an instructors tool. Students usually don't mind testing, especially if they know they won't be graded (as is my practice). The knowlege of and the ability to modify curriculum makes for better focused instruction.

I agree, pretest help instructors to develop instructional material according to the level of their students.

Michael,
Terrific idea. Math skills and aptidude is one thing that often has many differing levels of prior knowledge in just about any class. Providing resources, especially those that are specific to your course ought to provide valuable assitance to those that use it.

I teach a Culinary Cost Control class that requires strong math skills. On the first day of the class I give a Math Pre-Test to assess their current math skills as they relate to this class. I often find numerous students who have skill gaps and for them I have prepared a Math Primer or Workbook which help them bring their math skills up to the level they need for the class. Being aware of who these students are also helps me focus on them individually and give them the help they to need to succeed in the class.

Laxmi,
If we are going on a journey (as in a class to learn a particular subject), we have to have an idea beforehand how to get there. This is where a pretest can assist the teacher plan, develop, create, and deliver meaningful lessons that relate directly with the current students in class.
