Prerequisite

My program does not have any pre-requesites. Often I get students who lack basic skills needed to be successful in class. I have often thought about our school offering a basic computer class for example to students who wish to enroll.

Harry,
Great point, and probably more true than not. Even educators are sometimes far from exhibiting literacy, even in their own subject matter.

I find that computer savvy often refers to students being able to navigate social media sites, download music and videos and be able to play computer games. When it comes to using spreadsheets, knowing how to write, create a presentation, etc. most are clueless.

Joel,
Often we have to take students who have limited basic education in the subjects related to or required for success in the current class. I think patience, a willingness to help, and offering support can show the student that their instructor cares about their learning even if they aren't doing that well.

I teach IT100 a lot and try to hit the basics as part of that class and reduce the ongoing frustration that can arise.

Shannon,
Many students come "computer-savvy, but there are those that do not. I try to lend assistance whenever I can with what I know, but sometimes students need more than I can provide, there's not enough time, or what little I share is not enough to help them completely. There are some free resources on the internet, YouTube, and MS-Office has help topics for select programs.
