You're right. I'm fortunate that I have an opportunity to meet with every student before they begin my program. Usually I'm able to identify potential weak areas and use that information to assist students. Also, focusing on identified strengths of individualized students can bring a more interesting and engaging classroom experience for all.

Student background can be an under appreciated part of the classroom experience. Trying to determine teaching challenges can often be related back to prior experience or learning.

Students come to us with varying degrees of prior knowledge. If we can assess them with a brief pretest it can give the instructor an idea about what material may need to be reviewed, or areas that may not need as much emphasis.
