the 4 major learning styles
I enjoyed learning about the 4 major categories of learning
- Written Word
- Visual
- Auditory
- Tactile
I found the my style is visual - did anyone else find this enlightening?
Suzie,
I've also found learning capacity changes with the activity, such as as a visual learner for lecture may excell in lab, where it is hands on.

Barry,
I agree with you completely. Engaging a variety of learners through different methods of instruction is really important.
In addtion to being able to reach out to all the different kinds of learners, I like helping students get outside their comfort zone and try new approaches to the learning process. it's always exciting to see those who thought they were only able to learn one way find other avenues to take in knowledge.
Elena,
One approach that usually reaches all learner generations is providing an instructional environment that has a lot of variety, and distributes information in shorter segments. Use of different electronic media is great for transitions from one segment to another, or as a stand alone piece. And any time we can engage students by their participation is likely to yield improved learning outcomes.

I instruct at a technical school and experience adult learners from a wide variety of ages. Generation X has a more tactile preference. They are my note takers. They are also very good at problem solving and practicing their skills in the lab.
On the other end of the spectrum are my 18-22 year olds. They become bored quite easily and are mostly visual and tactile learners. They require a great deal of stimulation and are easily distracted. They are my most challenging because they still have that high school mentality.
I myself am a visual and tactile learner.
it's was very helpful for me
