what to teach
TO KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR SUBJECT AND THE PEOPLE YOU ARE TEACHING IS PARAMOUNT TOYOUR PURPOSE.
In my subjects, I feel it is important to emphasize material that will be useful right away, or immediately after graduation. Being able to tie work in the classroom to real work situations helps the students process the information better.
I think that it does negatively affect retention, but more importantly it negatively affects learning. There's no way that our students could possibly retain all of the information that we present to them and they get overwhelmed if we expect them to, but when I try to narrow it down, I find it difficult to leave things out. What advice can anyone offer on how to decide what's most important?
Our program and lesson plans are predetermined by the school. As a result we are required to cover all the material during the allotted class time. Over the years I have learned to concentrate on the most important information during a lecture and spend less time explaining peripheral information on the subject. Presenting too much information can have a negative effect on retention.
