Assessment Test

Before a new class I always have a pre and post assessment test. This serves two functions:

1) It gives me a base line of knowledge for the class.
2) By showing students the pre and post they can see thier own progress, This helps to motivate a student.

Pre-Test or Quizzes can be a great way for Students to narrow down fundamentals of what is most important.

We have in place an assessment that sets the level that the student should be at inorder to enter the course. I think this helps give us a base line.

assessemt test actaully shows how much students have learned from the class.

I rely on pre-tests to find areas students are weak in. I can then start to focus their attention in those areas.

Clifton,

In addition, post assessments can be used to assist with personal, instructor development. For instance, if a substantial amount of students did not get a particular question(s) correct, then the instructor may feel that they could explain the topic in a more practical way or provide their students with more practice assignments.

I think pre/post assessments in any course can only make your work as an instructor more productive. You gain knowledge of areas where more or less time needs to be spent with the course. In my classes this is just the norm when beginning courses. I do an oral and written pre test and a post test. I allow the student to see their start and the progress they have made.

I have started to implement pre-testing in my classes. This is a good mechanism to gauge how many students are reviewing the information prior to class. It also helps to engage the students in class discussion, when they are reviewing prior to lecture.

Andres,
I agree pre and post test can be good. It allows you to see what the students know and it also allows the student to see what they know. It allows the pre test allows the instructor and class to move ahead accordingly.

Andres,

I also believe that pre/post assessments for assessing course preparedness and the knowledge that was gained from taking the class. In my experience, the only issue is that the students tend to have a high-level of test anxiety, when I give them the pre-assessment, on the first day of the course.
